Newcastle group Sorority Grrrls might already occupy the fabled sweet-spot between The Slits and Bikini Kill while the band themselves cite Sleater Kinney and Dazey And The Scouts as influences.

The band have said: “We say we are a riot grrrl band [but] we feel very strongly about making riot grrrl more inclusive than it was in the 90s. We have lots of songs about different things ranging from mutant sorority girls from hell killing their sisters, to more serious ones about abortion and trans rights. All our songs heavily feature politics and feminism which is the core of our band.”

The group’s debut single was recorded at Middlesbrough College on 22 February 2023, and engineered and mixed by some of the college’s Sound and Music Technology BSc (hons) students.

American Sicko is a wordplay on ‘American Psycho’ and tackles the issues surrounding the fetishisation of serial killers.

More explicitly, Dead Babies on the Floor was written about abortion just after the overturning of Roe v Wade in America and already sets the band out as equal parts political, headstrong and opinionated. The juxtaposition of the two tracks is not coincidental either. By railing against the glorification of murder but supporting abortion the band seek to antagonise but provoke thought, and unsettle but captivate...
